Advantech Products Adopt Newest Mini PCI 56K Modem

Advantech continues to embody the latest technology by offering a new Mini-PCI 56K modem in its product line. With a Mini PCI socket and modem now being offered on the just released EBX PCM-9550 SBC and the top-of-the-line POS-760 point-of-sale board, this new Mini PCI modem card represents the latest gains in PCI technology.

The specifications of the Mini PCI modem make it perfect for embedded applications. Qualities such as V.90/K56 voice/data/fax capability, an extremely small size, low power consumption (3.3 V DSP/CODEC with enhanced power-saving modes) and a higher-bandwidth bus, all effectively address the communication needs of the embedded SBC market. With a board size of 44.45 mm x 59.6 mm x 4.9 mm that is routed through an onboard 124-pin card-edge connector only 3 mm in height, the Mini PCI modem maintains a very low profile that is attractive for space restricted embedded applications.

Perfect for Embedded Use, Good for Advantech Customers

Developed mainly for the needs of the portable computer market, Mini PCI defines a very small internal card that is functionally identical to standard desktop computer PCI cards. Advantech's current supplier for these boards also manufactures Mini PCI modem cards for some of the world's leading notebook computer makers. Therefore, this modem card has already received approval in many countries (see specifications list).

Mini PCI also benefits embedded customers in other ways.

  • Mini PCI cards can easily be replaced if they fail or need to be upgraded. Many current integrated communications devices require the entire system board be replaced in these cases.
  • Standardization of the Mini PCI form factor facilitates the speed at which new designs can reach the market. Customers can choose what communication features they need, providing for more flexibility and streamlining the overall product development process.
  • Embedded customers should also benefit from cost savings and innovations achieved in the future Mini PCI market. With notebook computers leading the way in this competitive market, prices should drop, quality should increase and innovation should give new products. New products like the Mini PCI combination modem/ethernet are already hitting the notebook computer market.
