POS for Golf and for Dinner

A European systems integrator has designed an ingenious use for Advantech's POS boards-as an information input and retrieval system at a golf course. Each patron is issued a hand-held, wireless device which he or she can use for remote data access, check-in/check-out, communication, reservations, etc. POS terminals are also scattered around the country club and restaurant for more detailed and graphical information retrieval, such as browsing for and ordering food at the country club's restaurant.

Why Advantech

This company chose Advantech's POS-460 486-based control board as the heart of its many user terminals. For the main server, Advantech's POS-560 Pentium-based control board was chosen. Both of these boards have 10Base-T Ethernet, DiskOnChip® 2000 Flash memory sockets and LCD/VGA controllers, among other important features. Another significant reason why Advantech was chosen was because Advantech provided help with LCD integration.

Other Application Examples

Besides using POS systems at golf courses or restaurants, they are also very useful in such places as banks, train and bus stations, airports, schools and colleges, museums, ticket machines, information kiosks, etc. These are just some of the public uses of this kind of device. There are countless other uses in offices, factories and at home. The possibilities are endless.

Advantech Weighs in Big

Never before has Advantech's small, palm-sized Biscuit PC weighed in so big. Actually, its weight (only 0.32 kg) was less important than its size (203 x 146 mm) and its all-on-board features when it came time for an Australian company to pick the computational heart of it new automatic supermarket food scale.

User-friendly Application

This application helps customers weigh their fruit and vegetables. It then prints out the name of the produce, a unit number and barcode, and the price. It can also supply information about nutrition, recipes, or other sales going on in the supermarket (to encourage customers to buy more). Interaction is made possible by use of a touchscreen. This is a good example of how Advantech contributes to improve living automation.

Why Advantech

Advantech's PCM-5862 Pentium® processor based Biscuit PC was chosen over those of its competitors for many reasons. First was its compactness and reliability. On a palm-sized board, Advantech was able to fit a Pentium®-class processor and support chips, Ethernet, audio, LCD/touchscreen control chips, and D/IO through the parallel port as well. Second, Advantech was especially helpful with technical support (both their Ethernet and vertical-oriented screen needed special BIOS adjustments). Third, customized modification of their connectors was performed, and lastly, Advantech's brand name recognition meant that it would be a reliable and trustworthy partner.
